What Is Generation X?

Generation X is often referred to Gen X is the generation who were born after the baby boom post World War 2. This generation are affectionately known as “Baby Boomers”.

The term Generation X was brought to prominence in 1991 by Douglas Coupland’s novel titled “Generation X – Tales for an Accelerated Culture”. The book concentrates on and highlights the lifestyles of young adults within the 1980’s.

There are many references to the exact dates that Generation X falls under and after doing some personal research I have found that the average date range is 1965-1982.

My reasons for writing about this subject are that I am a Generation X. I was born in 1968 in the United Kingdom. Personally I think that the term is a little bit clinical and think whoever thought of this term could have come up with something a little bit more endearing.

If you are a Gen Xer like me then you will be pleased to know that we are and I quote “highly educated, active, balanced, happy and family orientated”. I don’t know about you but I am certainly happy to be described in that way. I feel that that relates to everything about me as a person and personally that comes from my parents’ generation who were brought up on good values and morals which were passed down to me.

Any way maybe you are wondering why I am talking to you about this. Let me explain. Over the next few days and weeks I would like to address a few things that us Generation X members may have faced up to with predominantly in our professional lives but also our personal lives which are often linked but we don’t always see the connection. Decisions we make in one phase can have a dramatic effect on the other phase.

I will talk about many different things such as the changes in lifestyle, technology, social issues, economic issues, careers, aspirations, expectations, planning for the future. I hope that you will be able to relate to certain things which have happened with in your life.

I will give you an insight into what has happened to me in my life, how I have dealt with them and how it has leaded me to where I am today.
