What Happened On This Day 25 Years Ago?

The date was Friday 25th 1990. What is significant about this date? To you maybe nothing. To me the Friday before Whitsun is when I quit my job!

I walked out of my corporate office for the last time. It was not until today that I suddenly realised I have been my own boss for a quarter of a century and I made a point of driving past the old office.

I don’t know why but something told me I had to. It was not for nostalgia, I think it was to reaffirm that I made the right decision all those years ago.

Some people said I was mad and I would never make it work. Some of those people were family, friends and my old boss.

I proved them wrong. I still work for myself. The company I worked for went bankrupt 2 months after I left. Another printing firm moved into the premises a few years later but they shut down about 5 years ago.

Since then the offices have remained empty and I must admit the building looks very run down and sad.

It did bring back memories both good and bad. The good memories were of the friends I had at the company. Good people who were left in the lurch the day the company went bust. They had to wait for nearly a year for any form of severance pay.

I was lucky when I left as I got all my wages and holiday entitlement paid up. I spent 5 years there and there were some good times.

The bad memories were towards the end of my time there. I simply hated going to work. I knew the company was in a difficult position financially. The Tax Office were constantly ringing up wanting to speak to the boss and the suppliers I dealt with would not fulfill my orders as we had not paid the bills.

There was a bad atmosphere and I had lost respect for the boss and some senior management. Customers were always on the phone complaining the jobs had not been printed correctly and I was the person bearing the brunt of this which had nothing to do with me.

I was stressed out, chain smoking (60 a day) and at the age of 22 I felt like I was going to crack up.

I had always from the age of 14 wanted to start my own business and knew that the time was right to fulfill my dreams.

I handed in my notice. It was 3 weeks before Whitsun and as I have said I left on the Friday before the bank holiday weekend.

market stallI set up my own retail business trading on open air markets and I started 2 days after I left the company. Sunday came and I pitched up to sell my products.

I immediately felt refreshed, the weight had been lifted from my shoulders. I had energy and motivation. I still smoked but I was soon down to 20 a day.

The best feeling was that I was in control. I had the choices of where I wanted to work, what days and there was no more 9-5. Being told when I could take a lunch break and being told what to do.

I still have that feeling 25 years on. I work the hours I want, I do the work I want to do. At the time of writing this post I am currently involved in 4 different businesses.

One of them is my cleaning business which I operate on a daily business. It takes about 25 hours per week and I get out in the fresh air and I get regular exercise.

Laptop LifestyleThe other 3 businesses are internet based. I run them from my laptop. I don’t have to touch any products and I don’t have to speak to any customers unless I want to.

The products and services I sell are fulfilled either digitally online or by using fulfullment houses who ship the product, handle customer services, refunds and payment gateways.

Times have certainly changed from 25 years ago when I had to drive a 400 mile round trip to buy stock. Then I had to price it up and hang it on my stall with the hope that people would come in and buy it.

Now I don’t have any premises as everything is done online. All I need is a laptop and internet connection. I am now gearing up to wind down my cleaning business over the next 12 months which will free up more time to develop more projects online.

The time is right for me to take a new direction just like I did 25 years ago today!

So why am I telling you my story?

I would not be where I am today if I had not taken action. I took what I considered a calculated risk.

The retail market business did not work out aswell as I had hope so that is why I started my cleaning business. This business has now been established for 24 years and I set it up for under £150.00 which would equate to around £300.00 at today’s values.

Back in 1990 I was totally dejected, stressed out and I had no motivation. Also I have failed to mention that my partner and I were expecting our first child. I had to make things work and after 1 or 2 set backs I did make it work.

So if you can relate to anything that I have said then I can assure you that there is a way out.

  • If you just want to generate a second income then I can help!
  • If you are looking to sack your boss and take back control of your life then I can help!
  • If you are looking to build something alongside your current job or an existing business then again I can help.
  • You may have worries about whether your pension will pay out what you need then I can find you a possible solution.
  • You may want to retire your spouse or generally spend more time with your wife and kids then there opportunities out there.

Don’t go on making do with the cards that you have been dealt. If you want to change your life then take action and do something about it.

What If’s” and “Maybe’s” do not do you any good. The time is now and the opportunities are here for you to take advantage of unlike back in 1990 for myself.

I would love it for you to contact me to see what I can do to help you but I must issue a word of warning.

I only want to work with serious people. people who are prepared to put the work in, to take action and show commitment.

Time is valuable and I want to help people who want to be helped.

So if that is you then you can contact me by CLICKING HERE or go to the “Contact Us” tab at the top of this page.

25 years on and still going strong and to think that some people said “It will never last“. Wel it has and I am still going. Hope to hear from you soon.

As always I wish you well.
