If You Are At The Point Of Thinking I Hate My Job And Want To Quit, Then It Is Time To Act

An article from Pete Harris that looks to reassure people thinking “I hate my job and want to quit” that there is a way out.

Hi Pete Harris, here and it pains me to think that you are in a position of desperation and unfulfillment in your career. If you are constantly saying to yourself “I hate my job and want to quit” it is a debilitating position to be in. I sure know because back in the late 1980’s I was where you are now.

The reason for me writing this article is I have just recently watched an online webinar in which there was an alarming statistic. I must say it was from an unverified source but even so if it is true then it is shocking.

I Hate My Job And Want To Quit

85% Of People Are Saying “I Hate My Job And Wat To Quit”

Apparently 85% of people in work hate their job. When I heard this is took my breath away to think that there are so many people who dread going to work. Now there can be lots of reasons for people to get into this stage and this post is not the place to go through them. After all, as you have landed on this page you will have your own reason which is raw to you. You certainly don’t need to be reminded of it from me.

The word hate is destructive word and not one that I like, but I can relate to it. As I have mentioned it was the late 1980’s that I found myself in a vey dark place in my career. I was 22 years old and should have been looking forward to the future with excitement.

I was on the verge of becoming a new dad as my partner who I worked with was carrying our first child. This was a time that should have brought me joy beyond anything that I had experienced but it was being tarnished. The reason was that every morning I work up with the feeling of sheer dread about going to work. So I really hated my job with vengeance to the point it was affecting my health and sanity.

I held a middle management position in a family run printing company. I was involved with the administrative side of the business and had a front-line position. The company was in a bad way due to poor management at the top and the factory. The problem was I that it was myself that bore the brunt of customer angst.

I Was Fed Up Taking The Blame

I don’t mind taking the flack if it is my fault but not when it is the case of other people’s incompetence. Every morning I would wake up with the knowledge that the phone would ring of it’s hook with customer complaints. Also, they would come into the office and yes, I would be the one who had to face them. Now there isn’t enough time to give examples as there were way too many but the here is the general picture of how I was feeling.

I was depressed, anxious, short tempered with the people I loved and had no fulfilment in my work. I did not respect my boss or many of my colleagues and I was a chain smoker. Trust me when I say that having a 60 a day habit is not a great way to live your life.

volcano

I was like a volcano that was simmering under it’s top, but I could feel that pressure rising every day. Then like a volcano there comes to a point of no return. One day everything was hitting the fan and I snapped. I had blazing rows with the factory manager and the managing director. To be honest if he had fire me there and then I would have shaken his hand in gratitude.

Hasta La Vista

That didn’t happen but what did was what I had wanted to do for a very long time. I told my partner that I was quitting my job to start my own business. She was very supportive to the point that she said she was quitting as well. We didn’t have a plan, but I didn’t care as I then had a way out. I would work things out as we went. I went into work the next day and resigned for both of us. Three weeks later we walked out of the door for good.

Call it a knee jerk reaction if you want because many of my family and friends thought I was wrong and stupid. I didn’t care because I had got myself out of a position of self destruction. That is my story and I know yours will be different, but I am sure you can relate to what I was feeling and thinking.

In the 30 years that have past I have never been employed by anyone else so in general everything has worked out for me. There have been bumps and hurdles along the way which I have had to overcome. There has never been a moment that regretted quitting the job that I did truly hate.

I truly feel for you if you are in this position, but things are different now to they were back in the day. The only option I had was to put all my eggs in one basket and make that leap of faith. I went from a well-paid job to the unknown which could be looked upon as being reckless, but it was exciting. I felt that I had no other choice and you may feel the same, but I can give you another option.

I Hate My Job And Want To Quit, But What Is Your Plan B?

plan b

This option could be you “Plan B” which could lessen the feelings that you have because you could have a way out. The difference is your way out will be one that carries less risk than mine so let me explain what I mean.

The landscape back in the late 1980’s was very much the traditional bricks and mortar economy. If you had your own business, then the likelihood was you would have premises to run your business. I went into retail but didn’t want to be confined to one position, so I went out on the road. I had a portable retail business in the form of an open-air market stall. My stall sold baby and children’s clothes along with accessories and would be in a different location every day.

New Beginnings

I can still remember my fist day’s trading like it was yesterday. My partner and I ran the business together and our first market was a liberating experience. No phones to answer, no problems to sort out and having the weight of stress lifted from our shoulders. I went from hating my job to loving my new environment in a matter of a couple of days. I left my job at 5.00pm on a Friday afternoon and was stood on the market at 6.00am on the Sunday. A difference of 37 hours and I was like a new man full of hope. This is what I want you to feel but to do it in a more structured way.

We now live in a digital economy and opportunities are all around you which you may be unaware of. Technology has advanced beyond recognition back in the day. Mobile phones were very much in the early days of development and the size of a small suitcase. Now you can run a business from your phone and leverage the internet. You can access resources, technology and products without having to leave the comfort of your own home. Also, you can do this without having to spend thousands on set up costs.

You Don’t Need To Mortgage The House!

When I started my business back then it cost me around £5000 initially. In today’s value it would be over £10,000. The good news is that you don’t need to spend anything like that to get started and you can do it around what you do now. I know that you want to quit now, and I can’t tell you to do that or not because it would be unethical to do so.

What I can tell you is that if you had the chance to break away from what you are doing without any risk, would you be interested? If you had a way out could you put up with what you are doing for just a bit longer? At the moment your job is a means to an end, but you could build something alongside it which could eventually replace it!

I didn’t have this option because the only option was to continue trading time for money. The difference was the time I was trading in my new business gave me greater pleasure. The internet has created business models that to all intents and purposes have replaced the trading time for money lifestyle.

At the moment you may be working anything from 40-70 hours per week for your wages at the end of the month. There is no scope for you to earn anymore because there simply isn’t enough time. The internet on the other hand opens everything up for you to run a business 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.

Are You Prepared To Learn New Skill Sets?

learning new skill sets

Yes, it will take some of your time to learn how to do things and set systems up. The beauty is that once systems are set up it is just a matter of monitoring them. You then move onto setting up other systems until you are in position of attaining the lifestyle you want. Isn’t it worth taking the time now to do the work so you can reap the rewards in the future? Also, you will be creating a future of doing the things you love to do.

I understand that this may be a lot to take in and you may be sceptical which is what you should be. Back in 2014 I was sceptical, but I was also intrigued. So much so that I had to find out more about how it could work for me. That is what I did, and I learnt the processes and I did that alongside the cleaning business that I had owned for nearly 25 years.

I didn’t hate what I was doing but being a business owner, I was always looking for new opportunities. I still am to this day!

So, I have painted a picture of how I broke free from the desperation of doing a job that I hated. Hopefully I have given you the hope that there is something you can do to break free from your current position.
