Are Generation X A Generation Of Aspiring Entrepreneurs?

As a Generation X member I have very fond memories of my childhood growing up through the 1970’s and going into my teenage years and young adulthood in the 1980’s.

Over that decade life in general changed immensely. Times were very hard and my first real memories would be around 1974. There was a major recession gripping the United Kingdom where I live. It was a time of enforced power cuts and I can remember my mother getting the candles ready in the evening for when the lights went off. To a child of 5-6 it was exciting and to be honest a bit of an adventure. To the general adult population it was anything but. People were struggling to survive.

Why am I bringing up this subject you may be asking yourself? Well I can remember paying attention to certain things that were happening around 1976-1977. There were many entrepreneurs coming to the public’s attention.

Richard Branson, Clive Sinclair, Alan Sugar in the United Kingdom, and people like Steve Jobs and Bill Gates in the United States. I am sure there are many more like these around the world but it would be silly to name any more as I am sure you get the point. Any way these people made an impact on my life and I am sure many other peoples as well. The thing is that at that time I did not realise it. It was not until the early 1980’s that it came to the forefront of my mind.

Because I had seen these people prosper in the event of adversity due to the state of the countries at the time it was then when I was about 12 that I started to think that I wanted my own business. I had seen people build up massive companies and thought “I want some of that”.

Now I don’t want to get too political but the government at that time was led by Margret Thatcher. She was very much like “Marmite”; you either loved here or hated her. That being said she was very much of the opinion of encouraging people to get on in life. To better themselves, to start their own businesses, to own their own home. She wanted people to take action. That had an influence on me as well as a family member who was a successful businessman. I hope that you can see the point I am getting to.

All of these pieces started to fit together, the entrepreneurs, the encouragement from the government, members of my family, visualising the lifestyle I could have. That’s when it hit me, I was going to have my own business, and I was going to be an entrepreneur. I was 15 and I wanted my own photography studio. That unfortunately did not materialise due to the lack of opportunities in the area I lived. Due to the mind-set that I had built up it did not put me off and seven years later at the age of 22 I started my first business. The entrepreneur in me had been unleashed.

Now I realise that is my own story but I hope that as you are reading this that you can relate to certain points and certain thing happening in your life wherever you may live in the world.

As far as I am concerned the foundations of my mind-set were cemented in those years and I am sure that was the case of millions of Generation X around the world. The thing is I acted on it very early. That does not mean that it is the right way for everybody but it was for me.

Reading this you may be getting some same thoughst getting triggered off in your mind. Maybe you had aspirations of doing the same thing but for whatever reason the circumstances did not allow it to happen. The good thing it is never too late. If you still have aspirations to join the ever increasing Generation X members who are becoming entrepreneurs there are many options available to you right now.

At the time of writing this post I am operating my own very successful cleaning business. The thing is one thing about the entrepreneur mind-set is that you have more than one finger in different pies. I am also building and developing an Internet Marketing business which will provide me with multiple income streams. I am always looking to progress and thinking of the future.

The beauty of this industry and having an internet marketing business is that you can operate it from anywhere in the world as long as you have an internet connection. That is the type of business that I want to build. No geographical ties, the freedom to work when I want and where I want. This has a particular significance to me as in 2016 I will be relocating from the United Kingdom to Cyprus. As far as I am aware there is no other business where anybody can carry on and off an aircraft their business. With this you can, it’s called a laptop. There is no way I could relocate my cleaning business to another country. I would have to start again.

If you have ever wanted to be your own boss then maybe this type of business would be of interest to you. You may not know this but you already have 95% of what is need to become a successful entrepreneur. With the right coaching and mentoring then you will be all the way there.
