What Is Your Niche Market?
So you are going to be an online marketer but just what is your niche market. Unless you define your niche market you may as well be shooting in the dark.
So many marketers fall into the trap of picking products to promote or creating products and then go out to try and sell them. You may have what you think is the best product in the world but if there is no demand for it nobody is going to buy it. If you do this then you are starting at the end.
So logically you need to start at the beginning. You need to find if there is an audience for something. In other words a hungry crowd who have problems which you as a marketer can provide solutions. A very simple concept of supply and demand. Can you supply a solution for that demand. If you can and there is then you have found your niche market.
It is all to do with research. Yo can come up with ideas and then use tools and resources that are readily available to you.
So how do you come up with ideas to discover a niche market?
First of all I would think about your interests and passions. if you as a person are interested in something then it makes it so much easier to write good content and promote products because you have a passion for it. Once you have come up with some ideas then it is time to start digging for gold.
So where do you start?. I usually start with the Google Keyword Planner. Enter your search term in the box and a list of results will be returned. In this first image I have put in “body building“.
Looking down the results one term draws my attention, “how to build muscle” returns a search volume of 27,100. This means 27,100 people globally each month are using that exact keyword. The good thing about it is that it is called a long tail keyword which is more specific and it says that people are loking for a particular solution for that problem and they are also likely to spend money. So for myself that is the starting point. So we know people are looking so let’s go and find some products.
My first point of call is Clickbank. They are one of the largest affiliate programs listing digital products. I have looked under the health fitness catagory and here are some results.
In this image the top 2 products are digital training programs for muscle building. The average sale is between $20 – $85 and they both have recurring omnthly income commissions to earn as well. This is good because basically you do the work once in advertising the product and keep getting paid month after month.
Next I go to Amazon. It seems logical that body builders will use some forms of equipment.
There are many types of products but I have chosen dumb bells for this example. As you can see there are ample products to promote.
My last port of call is an affiliate program called Market Health. Body builders sometimes use supplements so let’s see what they have got.
As you can see here they have a muscle building product. It pays $45 per conversion.
This whole process took me about an hour to find if there are people out there looking for a solution and to source and locate products to promote.
One last thing I looked for is a domain name with these keywords in it. When I first put the keywords inyou can see that there are no domain names available apart from the .mobi which is not what I would be interested in.
What I did next, and to be honest some people say it is not recommended, is to put hyphens in between the key words. Personally this does not bother me because at least it gives you a presence on the internet by doing that.
As you can see in the image above the .co is available. What I would do next is buy that domain and set up some form of website about how to build muscle, put some content in the form of articles and product reviews with my affiliate links embedded into the copy.
So as you can see from one idea there is an audience and three different types of products to promote in conjunction with each other or as a single stand alone product. Whether it works or not is down to your marketing efforts but for determining a niche market I personally think that this is a good example.
I hope that this has helped you with your process of finding a niche market. one last tip is to try and keep it as simple as possible.
As always I wish you well.

Pete hi,
I found this article clean, clear and quite informative. I always wondered how all this pulled together. thanks for the insite… (lol pun intended!)

Thank you Cat.
well explained article Pete – and love the screen shots to demonstrate exactly what we need to do. You mention having hyphens in exact match domains names though – we find they’re OK for authority sites where people are pushing their content out, but for product sites relying on organic search, we find Google find them a bit spammy and are more likely to sandbox such sites – which is OK though if the intention is to keep building more and more sites. Great post still.
Thank you Greg & Fiona and thanks for the tip on hyphens.
Great insights, very helpful. thanks.
You are very welcome Bryan.
