Turn Columbo Into A Well Oiled Machine
You may think that I have gone off on some mad direction but I would like to talk about Columbo. Columbo was a fictitious criminal mastermind played by the legendary actor Peter Falk. His methods of operation were let’s just say unconventional but to him it all made sense.
He was notorious for having bits of paper here, there and everywhere. From his trouser and coat pockets to the interior of his car. Some how he was always able to bring them all together to solve the case. His eccentric nature and reputation for the getting the job done will stay in peoples memories for a long time.
So what has this got to do with business? Nothing and everything. Unless you have the ability to turn chaos into success in business then you are creating so much work for yourself. Columbo had it mastered, have you?
I am sure that you have guessed by now what I am going to talk about. Organization. In the past I have been guilty of being a bit like Columbo and I have driven my wife mad because I have had bits of paper here and there. Phone numbers and addresses of my cleaning business clients in my car, wallet and various corners of the house.
Luckily for me she sorted me out and trained me to write everything down in a diary and now I know exactly what I am doing. Everything worked ok before but now it is so much better.
Any way I digress. Methods, systems and daily plans of actions are what you need to create. Set up a calendar with tasks on each day that you need to complete. Whether that is dealing with your accounts, marketing campaigns, content writing, video creation, blogging, attending to emails, phone calls, appointments, the lists goes on and on.
Unless you have this all structured out you will turn into Columbo and you will be running around like a headless chicken and only if you are very lucky things may turn out ok.
Other things to think about are domain names and passwords to affiliate programs, hosting accounts, where you purchase you domains from, advertising accounts, social media accounts, again the list goes on.
For all these I suggest creating word documents or spreadsheets and print them off and save onto memory sticks for safe keeping.
Work space is important. Have a defined space where you go to work. Again I was guilty of this as I used to use the sofa for working while also having the television on in the background. Take away all distractions otherwise your work will be less creative and productive.
I have since invaded my wifes office at home and have my own little corner. I have a large whiteboard where I can list the things that need to be done and I can write my goals and targets on to keep me motivated and driven. Organization is key. I am up to speed now but I should have done it some time ago.
In all seriousness having these systems in place will help your business no end. Being able to put you hand on things at the drop of a hat and having your business running smoothly takes away a lot of the stress.
You become disciplined and it becomes a good habit. After all you are a professional marketer and entrepreneur. You are certainly not Columbo.

Great post, I loved it! I am such a big Columbo fan!! I am definitely going to share this one with my husband too as he really needs to read it. He has papers everywhere and I have tried to get him to use a diary for everything as your wife did (great minds!!) but it’s not worked yet. But it will! 🙂
Thank you Hayley, I really enjoyed this one.
I hope that people can relate to it and take value from it. Really enjoyed writing this one.
